Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A year after the disclosed events in the first book: “Scythe”, we discover that Citra has become a successful apprentice of Scythe Marie Curie AKA the “Grand Dame of Death” as she embraces the value of gleaning compassionately by having the dying spend their last moments with their family and choosing the method they wish to die with. Unlike Citra, Rowan has become a vigilante who rids the Scythedom of self-serving Scythes who actually enjoy gleaning due to their homogeneous preferences and other immoral intentions.A series of unfortunate events start occurring to Citra and Marie as they realize that their lives are at stake. Little did they know, it was due to their actions challenging the ideals of the “New Order” Scythes. Although there is a law that strictly separates the Scythedom from State, the Thunderhead somehow tries to save them through “unsavoury “ways.

What is the Thunderhead?

Let me give you short recap of the Thunderhead. Hundreds of years ago, during the final stages of the “Age of Mortality” humanity could no longer self-sustain as a society and natural disasters, disease and famine were at an all-time high. The “Age of Mortality” collapsed as humanity leaned towards an ideology of immortality and perfection. This led to the creation of a cloud which transformed into an omnipotent entity made to rule and serve humanity in every way, also known as the “Thunderhead.” The Thunderhead utilizes its accumulated data of all human knowledge, wisdom, and experience to contribute to the betterment of society.

The Arc of Scythe Trilogy’s is based on the weighty ideology of Life and Death and when it is left up to humans to decide their fate. We are given insight into the Scythedom through the fresh eyes of Citra and Rowan. In this sequel, we get a thorough understanding of the Thunderhead, a creation made to supervise humanity and how its embodiment of perfection may also be its downfall.

I found the sequel a lot better and meatier because of the expanded world, multiple POVs, philosophical questions of how Artificial Intelligence playing a huge role in a one world system and the action packed drama towards the end of the book! I truly started respecting Citra and Rowan as we finally get insight as they seek value in being a Scythe.

I can’t wait to find out how Mr. Shusterman will tie up all these lose ends. I have always been a fan of his since I got into the “Unwind” Series. His storytelling style is direct and the dramatic action can easily be visualized, as a live action adaption. I love how Mr. Shusterman doesn’t just write books for the sake of commercial success although I wouldn’t blame him for it. He always writes with a socioeconomic issue in mind and spins it into an amazing story.
